The Process
Our team has designed and built the world’s best private golf complexes consisting of large putting surfaces, multiple cuts of rough, tee boxes, sand bunkers and many other “real course” elements. Imagine waking up in the morning and hitting wedge shots from 50-125 yards in your backyard! For the privileged few who have the space and the means, this is a reality. If you are considering your own private golf complex, here is the process:
Initial onsite meeting
The goal of this meeting is to determine location viability for the proposed private golf complex. Things to consider are soil feasibility, jobsite access, drainage, and irrigation. Additionally, we will be asking a lot of questions to ascertain the client’s needs.
Decide on elements of the complex
Next, we need to establish all the shot making elements of the design. This includes the various undulations and breaks on the putting surface, bump and runs, flop shots, greenside bunkers, mid-range bunkers, various turf pile heights, designated chipping zones, tee boxes and more. Once we understand all the desired elements, we can then create a working budget.
Create a working sketch/design
Creating a rough sketch of the proposed elements is the first step of the rendering process. This is generally a hand sketched layout to establish a visual of the design. Once created and agreed upon, the working sketch is then formally submitted to our golf course architect for rendering.
Prepare professional architectural rendering
This process generally begins with a site visit from our golf course architect (GCA). During this meeting we will discuss the finite details of the project. These details include everything from slope and stimpmeter readings, to aesthetics and surrounding landscape ideas. Once all the details have been gathered our GCA will begin the rendering process.
Move materials to the jobsite location
After receiving the rendering from our GCA, we will then have enough data to order the materials for the install. Depending on access and scope of work, moving materials to the jobsite can take a few weeks.
Excavate, grade, and remove existing surface
Removal, grading, and haul away of the existing surface is done to create a blank canvass. Clearing out trees, shrubs, boulders, and all other impediments makes way for the next and most important step.
Shape complex
Golf green shaping is done by a professional shaper who will excavate, grade, and manipulate the area into the desired shape. This is done using skid steers, dozers, and rollers to create the various course like elements.
Create desired breaks and undulation
Before, during and after the green shaping process our design and installation team will closely monitor the contours of the putting surface. Keeping hole placement with in the USGA rules takes a well laid out plan. Our goal here is to create course like conditions with slopes ranging from 0-5% so we can replicate many different shots.
Establish pin placement
The size of the green will determine the number of holes. Making sure the pin placements are set on no more than 2% slope per USGA rules.
Install turf
We only use the highest quality Made in the USA synthetic turf to create the putting surface, first cut collar, second cut fringe/rough, and any additional element such as designated chipping areas, tee boxes, and bunkers. Our team has been installing private golf greens for over 25 years and are considered the BEST in the business. During this process we implement various proprietary technologies to ensure your green plays like the real thing.
Finishing touches
Tournament Greens takes great pride in perfecting your green. Every detail is meticulously considered, and a significant amount of time is spent on the finishing touches.
